Hair transplants have evolved very slowly over many years. The basic technique is to remove a strip of the scalp toward the back of the hairline above the collar. The first requirement is that the hair density in that area is sufficient to provide donor grafts which will appear “realistic,” when placed in their future “home.” The removed strip is then punched by round blades of 1-5mm in diameter. The harvested punch grafts are then inserted into small slits created in the area of sparse hair. The larger grafts are placed closer to the the more dense natural hair, the smaller grafts are progressed toward the area which has no hair. The skill of the procedure is orienting the angle of the hair grafts to match the natural pattern of whorls(cowlicks) in the patients’ natural hair pattern. Also, the grafts made more toward the completely bald areas should contain only 1-3 hairs. This avoids the “plug” appearance when grafts were first done without any regard to “tapering from large grafts to micrografts, the appearance was that of “corn rows.” Taking too large a swath of donor hair will tend to create a visible scar, taking a donor strip from a person with very sparse hair will result in poor hair density in the areas to be transplanted. It is an art far more than a science.
Generally, there are two types of permanent hair transplant treatment – FUT and FUE.
Follicular Unit Transplantation or Strip Method
This is the most effective and most popular mode of hair transplant. The biggest reasons behind this are its effective results and cost-effectiveness. As the name suggests, this strip method involves taking a strip of skin from the denser section of your scalp. Then, the donor section is stitched and the strip is separated into individual hair groups. Multiple slits are made in the in the bald portion and singular hair grafts are planted in them.
Follicular Unit Extraction
Here, the follicular units are taken from the minute puncture holes in the donor area. Next, the extracted follicles are planted in the bald section of the scalp. After a certain amount of time, you notice the growth of new hair from the transplanted section. Here, the transplantation cost is pretty low and reasonable.
